Tell WHO you are, not what you are

  • So often job seekers are confused about the job search process, it usually goes like this:
    •       I reviewed every line item in the job posting and my qualifications match every requirement, why haven’t they called me?
    •       I’ve sent my resume to hundreds of postings, no callback.
    •        I even created automated searches so I get emails for all the new jobs… it hasn’t helped, I just send more resumes with no call backs.
  • What happens is that they’re so focused on the end goal of the ‘job’ that they forget about what’s most important. The most important factor is the ‘who’. Who you are and how you are different than the other candidates out there. Who you are has to stand out from the crowd. Who you are is what’s going to get you the job, not what you are or what you’ve done.
  • Did you let that sink in?… Who you are is what’s going to get you the job.
  • So you just need to be aggressive with your introductions. People need to know who you are. Even if or when you lack certain job ‘requirements’ your personality and connection with the interviewer will allow and give them permission to make an exception. It happens all the time!
  • Expect exceptions to happen. Whether it’s a skill you lack or you have ‘too much’ experience, don’t overthink it. Take advantage of the opportunity in front of you and don’t worry about the job, worry about you. Here is a better way to concentrate on YOU versus the job.
  • Look at an interview as an opportunity to look yourself in the mirror. Look at your strong points, don’t focus on a small flaw or wrinkle. What you look for will be what you find.  Look for the reflection of your special qualities; what qualities do you have that make people seek you out? Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, accentuate the positive and highlight your strong traits. Need help figuring out your strengths?  Read this prior post.

Everyone goes through times when they hear those negative thoughts that tell them reasons why they can’t…. You must challenge yourself to find the ways you can!
